Sinusitis
Travis Henry 11/19/07 09:55 PM CST

29 year old Arab gelding with a unilateral nasal discharge.   Loosing weight and fetid odor from the right nostril.  No fever and the horse has a good appetite.

Oral exam

There is a diastema between the 108 and 109, there is also a diastema between the 110 and 111.  The diastema between the 110 and 11 has a deep pocket with food packing into the area.  The diastema between the 108 and 109  has gingiva across the space.

The radiograph reveals an abscess associated with the 111 and a fluid line in the sinus.

Treatment

The 111 was extracted and the socket cleaned and flushed then packed with dental wax.  The frontal sinus was trephined and the sinus flushed with warm saline.  The horse was placed on systemic antibiotics for 2 weeks.  This was done standing with 5 mg of Dormosedan IV and 10 mg IM.
